I liked the background information that you provided about the characters and either ending that you wrote will work great with your story. I personally found the second ending more detailed and gave a little more information. The story line itself was easy to follow and made sense. I like how you had Gertrude go back to the house and dicsover what she did...that makes the story more mysterious. And the ending! It was good because you didnt leave me hanging but it left me curious. In the one section about Gretchen i think her name is , maybe introduce her a little more before going into detail about her time with the disease. Also maybe describe how the admiral contracted the fever with more detail.
